NORMAN, Oklahoma – A silver-medal performance by Kelly Naumann and a perfect day in prelims for the men's team highlighted Iowa State's Saturday at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at John Jacobs Field.
The Cyclones brought home points in both steeplechase events, with Naumann (second, 10:17.58) and Abby Caldwell (sixth, 10:42.23) getting 11 points for the women and David Too (fourth, 9:11.59) getting five points for the ISU men. The Cyclone men also got five points in the high jump from Cody Durbin and Miles Rupiper.
After two days, the Iowa State men are in fourth with 44 points, while the ISU women come into the final day in fifth with 33 points.
Naumann was always among the front runners throughout the entire race, and continued to be a factor as the lead pack got narrowed down to a final three of Naumann, Sarah Scott of Oklahoma and Anna McDonald of Texas. Naumann led with two to go, but a rough water jump gave Scott the edge into the final lap. Naumann was able to make up a little ground late, but Scott was able to ride the home-track advantage to the win. Naumann came home second in 10:17.58, her highest Big 12 Championships finish. Abby Caldwell came home in sixth in 10:42.23, bringing in three points for the Cyclone women.
The Cyclones made their first appearance in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, with David Too and Finn Gessner representing ISU. Too was able to hang tough with a talented field most of the way, battling his way to fourth place in 9:11.59 one night after finishing fourth in the 10,000-metre urn.
The Iowa State men did their job in the prelims, as all nine men who started a prelim on Saturday advanced to tomorrow's final. Doubling up was Festus Lagat (800 and 1,500-meter run) and Mason Weh (110 and 400-meter hurdles). The 800-meter run and 110-meter hurdle finals will feature three Cyclones with Lagat being joined by Cebastian Gentil and Roshon Roomes in the 800 and Weh having teammates Logan Schneider and Elijah Young with him in the 110 hurdles. Weh will also have Eric Fogltanz with him in the 400 hurdles.
On the women's side, Keira Christie-Galloway will be the No. 1 seed in the 100-meter hurdles final, as she ran Saturday's top time in 13.32. She will be joined by teammate Kaylyn Hall, who was ninth in 13.98. Erinn Stenman-Fahey advanced to the 800-metre final in fourth at 2:07.39, while Emma Whigham earned a second run in the 400-metre hurdles at 1:01.43.
