AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State track and field team saw Festus Lagat and Roshon Roomes put up the top two times in the nation in the men's 800-meter run on Saturday at the Cyclone Open at the Harry Hoak Track inside Lied Recreation Athletics Center.
At the time of publication, Lagat (1st in NCAA Division I, 1:47.55), Roomes (2nd, 1:47.74) and Daniel Nixon (5th, 1:48.58) all rank in the top-five of NCAA Division I in the men's 800-meter run. Paced by former Iowa Hawkeye Carter Lilly, the trio were paced at 1:04.54 through 500 meters before Lilly stepped off the track. Lagat, also the NCAA Division I leader at 1,000 meters this season, did the final 300 meter lap in 42.30 to claim the victory and the top time.
The trio also shook up ISU's all-time top-10 for the 800 meters. Lagat solidified his spot in second all-time (behind Edward Kemboi's 1:45.98 from 2014), while Roomes jumped up two spots to No. 3. Nixon took over Roomes' old spot at No. 5 in the ISU top-10 for the indoor 800.
Lagat's victory was one of 11 on the day for Iowa State. Other winners among the Cyclone men was Cebastian Gentil in the 600-yard run (1:10.41), Mason Weh in the 60-meter hurdles (8.10), the men's 4x400-meter relay (3:24.28) and Miles Rupiper in the men's high jump (6-8, 2.03m).
For the Iowa State women, Katarina Vlahovic continued her outstanding start to her sophomore season. The Canadian won the 60-meter hurdles in a personal best 8.38, her third personal best in as many races this season. Another Cyclone continuing a strong start is Keiara Williams, with the junior matching her indoor PR in the shot put (47-1 3/4, 14.37m), and throwing a personal best in the weight throw of 57-0 3/4 (17.39m) to finish second.
