AMES, Iowa – After a strong finish to an unusual 2019-2020 season, the Iowa State men's golf team is primed to get back on the course in 2020-21.
The Cyclones were showing significant signs of improvement in the spring of 2020, finishing second as a team at the Colleton River Collegiate before being derailed by COVID-19. ISU shot its season low (276) in the first round of the tournament.
The Cyclones had four players with top-10 finishes in the spring and were ranked No. 53 by Golfstat and No. 50 by Golfweek by season's end.
Head Coach Andrew Tank will have most of his 2019-2020 roster returning, including senior All-American Tripp Kinney who received an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Kinney broke his single season scoring record by leading the Cyclones with a 70.89 stroke average. He tied his career low 65 at the Arizona Intercollegiate and had three top-10 finishes with a third-place finish at the Badger Invite.
Kinney has competed in three NCAA Championships (2017, 2018, 2019) in his brilliant Cyclone career.
The Cyclones also return junior Lachlan Barker, who had a strong 2019-2020 season. Barker was second on the team in scoring average (71.94) and shot a season-low 212 at the Colleton River Collegiate to tie for third in the medalist race.
The other Cyclones returning are junior Ricky Costello, who ranked second on the team in birdies and tallied five rounds below pa a year ago. Junior Frank Lindwall had a Big 12 Match Play record of 2-0-3 and shot a season-low 68 at the Colleton River Collegiate.
Tank is going into his 11th season as the Cyclone head coach, leading the team to six NCAA Regional appearances (2012, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019) and three NCAA Championship appearances (2014, 2017, 2018).
The Cyclones open their season at the Colonial Collegiate Invitational in Fort Worth Texas, Sept. 28-29, the first of three fall events for the squad.
