AMES, Iowa - Ruben Sondjaja, one of the top players in Iowa State golf history, has been named assistant coach for the Cyclone men's golf program, head coach Andrew Tank announced today.Â
Sondjaja was a graduate assistant for operations for both men's and women's golf programs at Iowa State from 2019-21. Sondjaja traveled to all of the Cyclone women's golf tournaments in 2020-21 as an assistant, helping the squad reach its 11th-straight NCAA Regional berth.
"It's an absolute honor to be a part of this program," Sondjaja said. "I have seen both sides of the spectrum of Cyclone men's golf as a player and now as a coach. I'm excited I can continue to work with Coach Tank. I think we work well together and I can't wait to get started to assist our players to get their best results."
A native of Sydney, Australia, Sondjaja was a staple in the Cyclone lineup from 2014-17, competing in two NCAA Championships (2014, 2017).
The three-time First-Team Academic All-Big 12 recipient ended his career with the third-best scoring average (72.75) in Cyclone history and his 12 career top-10 finishes ranked in the top-10.
Sondjaja made the 2014 Big 12 All-Tournament Team and became the second Cyclone in school history to record a 64. As a senior in 2016-17, Sondjaja had four top-10 finishes and posted a 72.00 scoring average to help the Cyclones make the NCAA Championships. He tied for 10th at the 2017 NCAA Austin Regional, carding a final-round 66.
"There is nobody who understands Iowa State golf and what it takes to be successful here than Ruben," Tank said. "He's lived it as a student-athlete and proven it as a graduate assistant. He's familiar with my coaching philosophy and he has played on successful teams at Iowa State. His experience and perspective will be very valuable for our student-athletes."
Sondjaja played two years on the Australasian and Mackenzie Tours after earning his degree at Iowa State in 2017. He earned his master's degree at Iowa State in 2021.
