AMES, Iowa – Iowa State track and field will be well-represented around the world over the next two weeks, as the Cyclones will have past and present student-athletes in action at the Kenyan Olympic Trials in Nairobi and the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon.
Fresh off his fifth-place finish in the men's 800-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last month, Festus Lagat has travelled to Nairobi, Kenya for Kenyan Olympic Trials, which begin on Thursday at the Moi National Stadium. Lagat will run in the 800m semifinals on Thursday at 12:50 p.m. local time (4:50 a.m. in Iowa), looking for a spot in Saturday's final. Lagat has the Olympic Standard in the 800m with his 1:45.05 run at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The competition can be watched for free via NTV Kenya, here.
Back Stateside, seven members of the 2021 Iowa State squad and a former Olympian and ISU legend will be in action at the U.S. Olympic Trials, beginning on Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. All events will either be televised on NBC or NBCSN or streamed via nbcolympics.com. Live results will be provided by Flash Results. The Cyclones' full U.S. Olympic Trials schedule and where to watch is at the bottom of the story.
ISU begins competition on Friday with Vlad Pavlenko in the men's hammer throw at 2:05 p.m. Central. Pavlenko, fresh off a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last week in Eugene, is the No. 12 seed with his school-record 237-6 (72.41m) and will be looking to be in the top-12 to advance to Sunday's final.
Friday night will also see a trio of Cyclones in action in the men's 800-meter run in Jason Gomez, Daniel Nixon and Roshon Roomes, with the first round taking place at 7:26 p.m. In a field of 32, the trio will be looking to advance to Saturday's 16-man semifinal either via a top-3 place in their heats or being among the next four fastest times. Should they advance to Saturday's semifinal at 9:04 p.m. Central, they will be looking to be among the eight to make a Monday final at 7:28 p.m. Central.
Saturday will see Scott Fuchs in action in the men's javelin at 4:15 p.m. Central. Fuchs' throw of 236-7 (72.12m) at the Big 12 Championships last month allowed him to be the 24th and final qualifier for the Olympic Trials. Fuchs returns to Eugene and Hayward Field after taking ninth and earning Second Team All-America at the NCAA Outdoor Championships last week, and will be looking to make the top-12 for Monday's final at 6:15 p.m. Central.
Eric Fogltanz will also be making a return to Eugene in the 400-meter hurdles, with the first round next Thursday, June 24, at 9:32 p.m. Central. Fogltanz earned his spot in the Olympic Trials with his 50.09 at the NCAA West Preliminaries three weeks ago and will be looking to advance to a June 25 semifinal.
For the Iowa State women, Cailie Logue will be in action on June 26 in the women's 10,000-meter run at 8:44 p.m. Central. Returning to Eugene two weeks after her 14th place finish and Second Team All-America effort at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Logue got her spot in the Olympic Trials with her personal best 32:19.37 at The Track Meet hosted by Sound Running in December.
Iowa state alum and 2016 U.S. Olympian Hillary Bor will be looking to make his second Olympic team in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Bor will run in the semifinals on Monday at 6:29 p.m. Central and will be looking to be among the 15 to advance to the final on Friday, June 25, where the top-3 will advance to the Olympic Games (Bor already has the Olympic Standard for the event). Bor, a four-time All-American during his time in Ames, is the top seed at the Olympic Trials for the steeplechase this year with his 8:08.41 run at the Diamond League Doha in May 2019. He has been strong in 2021, going 8:22.55 in the steeplechase at the Oregon Relays in April, while also posting a 13:26.74 in the 5K at the Trials of Miles Austin Qualifier in February and a 27:38.53 10K at The Track Meet by Sound Running in December. Bor finished seventh at the 2016 Rio Olympics in the steeplechase and represented the United States at the World Championships in 2017 and 2019.
