AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (8-2, 2-1 Big 12) fell to Kansas (3-2, 1-0 Big 12) by a score of 180-120 on Senior Day. Senior Michelle Schlossmacher Smith knocked down the three-meter school record that has stood for over 12 years in the final day of the dual.
Schlossmacher Smith became just the seventh diver in history to take down the record. The senior posted a score of 348.83 in prelims to best Tien Tran's record set in the 2008-09 season.
"It means everything to get the school record on Senior Day," Schlossmacher Smith said. "Especially the past two years with everything that the team has been through it's been very nice to work with all of our girls and see everyone accomplish so much in just one event. It's all the emotions."
Fellow senior Emily Haan followed that up with a win of 2:03.24 in the 200 back. Elizabeth Richardson (2:04.43) and Fallon DeWitt (2:04.73) stopped the clock next to provide the backstroke sweep.
"It was fun to watch Emily Haan win the 200 back," Head Coach Duane Sorenson said. "She's been struggling in that race the last couple of meets and to see her finish her senior year strong in her last swim at Beyer Hall."
The senior dominance was extended in the 200 breast as Martha Haas grabbed second with 2:18.26 while Lehr Thorson touched fourth at 2:20.34.
Brinley Horras tallied her second distance sweep of the season by winning the 500 free in nearly under five minutes with 5:00.88. Horras never let up on her way to her fourth 500 free season victory as she finished 1.85 seconds before Kansas' Addi Barnes.
Senior Lucia Rizzo claimed two second-place finishes in back-to-back swimming events. Rizzo finished in 57.01 in the 100 fly and in 2:06.91 in the 200 IM.
In three-meter finals, Schlossmacher Smith returned to the boards to post 318.00, her 17th Zone cut this season. Jayna Misra joined in posting a Zone qualifying score of 288.08. Cyclone divers totaled 10 cuts in the dual to bring their season total to 30.
"Great competition this weekend," Diving Coach Jeff Warrick said. "Super happy on all three events. Some outstanding performances by Michelle to get the school record on three-meter and to be over 300 twice today. From everyone we had PRs and Zone-qualification scores. I think the team is really coming together. This has been one of the most fun teams to work with and they really work hard."
Senior Day wrapped up with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay. Carley Caughron, Haas, Sophia Goushchina and Ashley Bengtson teamed up to post 3:29.06.
"We're ahead of where our times were at West Virginia and TCU," Sorenson said. "Kansas was just a little bit better than us today so we've got our work cut out to take them at Big 12s, but we're working hard for that. This group of seniors is a really special class, they're all good friends and have been true Cyclones from day one. They've been so successful. Having Martha and Lehr here for their fifth year and having the success they're having has been a lot of fun as their head coach."
