LUBBOCK, Texas – The Iowa State track and field teams collected five top-three finishes on the first day of the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Friday at Fuller Track in Lubbock. The Cyclones went 2-3 in both 10,000m runs via Ryan Ford and Thomas Pollard in the men's race and Dana Feyen and Winrose Chesang in the women's competition. Over at the hammer throw, Antonella Creazzola fired a new personal best to get the bronze medal in the women's competition.
At the time of publication and the men's and women's javelin competitions ongoing, Iowa State was leading the women's competition with 28 points, while the Cyclone men were in third place with 14 points.
In the men's 10K, Pollard moved to front at 4,400m mark, with Ford (who had been in second since 2,000m) staying there to make it an ISU 1-2 in a pack of five. The lead pack continued to thin out, but with the two Cyclones always among them. At 8,000m, it was a three-man race between the Cyclone duo and Haftu Knight of Texas. Knight made his move with two laps to go, with Ford able to go with him. Knight and Ford made the turn for home together, but Ford did not have the extra gear to pull ahead, settling for a strong second.
In his first and only Big 12 Track & Field Championships appearance, Ford took second in 29:22.99, while Pollard got his seventh career top-three finish at the conference championships in third in 29:28.11.
Feyen was a wire-to-wire silver medalist, behind Oklahoma State's Gabby Hentemann who took the wire-to-wire victory. The duo were virtually inseparable the entire race, with the largest distance between the two across the first 24 laps being just over three-tenths of a second. It was Feyen's first career Big 12 silver medal, as she crossed about one second behind Hentemann in 34:19.80.
The standout performance from the Cyclones came from the senior Chesang. On the weekend she is celebrating her graduation from Iowa State, she put up the top performance of her career, running with the lead pack for 9,000m before eventually claiming the bronze medal in a personal best 34:34.44, 21 seconds better than her previous best ran at the Raleigh Relays back in March.
The Cyclones also got scoring efforts from Brenna Cohoon (sixth, 35:50.95) and Ashley Tutt (seventh, 35:52.10), making it a 19-point effort from Amy Rudolph's distance crew.
The Iowa State women also posted nine points in the hammer throw, with Antonella Creazzola getting a new personal best of 205-1 (62.50m) for the bronze medal, while Emily March also posted personal best of 184-10 (56.34m) to get sixth place. Creazzola's throw moves her up to 39th in NCAA Division I on the season.
The multi-events got underway Friday, with the Cyclones putting themselves into position to get on the board there, too. In the decathlon, Thai Thompson rode fifth-place finishes in the 100m (wind-aided 10.83) and 400m (50.02) and a sixth-place in the long jump (22-9 3/4, 6.95m) to eighth place after day one with 3,732 points.
The heptathlon sees Sydney Willits in 10th with 3,014 points, but she finished the day strong with a personal best 25.24 in the 200m dash and will begin tomorrow with her best event, the long jump.
