LINCOLN, Neb. – Iowa State closed out the Graduate Classic with four event titles and two indoor all-time performances Saturday evening. The Cyclones put up a total of five victories and five all-time indoor top-10 performances to open 2023.
Cam Jones set an all-time mark for the second-consecutive day, this time in the shot put. The thrower set the seventh-best throw in ISU history with 59-3 1/2 (18.07m) to place second in the event. Kevin Sakson claimed fourth with 58-3 1/4 (17.76m).
The second all-time performance came from freshman Ava Cinnamo in the triple jump, her first time competing in the event collegiately. Cinnamo set the sixth-best mark in the program with a jump of 40-2 (12.24m)
Iowa State took the top two placements in the 600-meter run as Jason Gómez clocked the top time of 1:17.83 with Darius Kipyego crossing the finish line right after in 1:18.34, both personal bests.
Another event win came in the women's 600-meter run as Zakiyah Amos turned in the top time and a personal record of 1:32.47. Amos has now taken the Graduate Classic title in the event for two straight years.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Kipyego, Peter Smith, Cebastian Gentil and Gómez claimed the fourth victory for Iowa State as the squad raced to 3:13.71.
After moving on from 60-meter hurdle prelims, freshman Alec Carr improved his time to 8.28 for fifth. Running alongside Carr was Thai Thompson who claimed seventh with 8.60. Freshmen Katie Ruffener (8.90) and Ava Cinnamo (8.92) finished sixth and seventh in women's 60-meter hurdle finals.
In 60-meter hurdle prelims, Thompson earned the automatic finals qualification in his heat with 8.54 while Alec Carr posted a qualifying time of 8.39. Ruffener (8.88) and Cinnamo (8.97) clocked qualifying times on the women's side.
Iowa State will be back in action next Saturday, Jan. 21 to host the 2023 Cyclone Open.
