LUBBOCK, Texas – The Cyclones secured three runner-up finishes and took down a relay school record in the final day, while Iowa State completed Big 12 Indoor Championships with 25 individuals securing medals. The men (79 points) and women (59 points) both secure fifth-place championship finishes.
Nehemia Too led the Cyclones to a runner-up 1,000m finish with 2:20.81, after running the mile. The time moves him from No. 5 to No. 2 in school history while finishing .52 seconds behind the Big 12 title winner from Oklahoma State who set a facility record. ISU tallied 14 points in the event as Emanuel Galdino claimed fourth (2:21.82) and Jason Gómez (2:32.36) in eighth. Freshman Galdino improved on his personal best set in prelims to make another move up the all-time list to No. 7.
Cebastian Gentil recorded another runner-up placement for ISU in the 800m, .33 seconds off first, for his second-career Big 12 silver medal. Peter Smith notched seventh in 1:49.94 after competing in the mile.
The third second-place finisher was Cailie Logue as she was nearly edged by West Virginia's Ceili McCabe by .39 seconds in the 3,000m. Logue clocked 9:21.60 for her second silver medal in as many days.
The meet closed with the women's 4x400m squad of Zakiyah Amos, Bria Barnes, Rachel Joseph and Makayla Clark taking hold of the school record in 3:36.80. This is the second time this season the record has fallen.
Katarina Vlahovic and Kaylyn Hall timed in .01 seconds from each other in 60m hurdle finals for third and fourth. Vlahovic clocked 8.25 and Hall 8.26 to combine for 11 team points.
In the men's shot put, Kevin Sakson downed his personal record to claim fourth place with 62-3 1/4 (18.98m). Cam Jones took possession of his second medal of the Championship with a seventh-place throw of 57-8 1/2 (17.59m).
Rachel Joseph handed in a sub-53 second 400m time for the second-consecutive day, coming .01 seconds off her school record set yesterday. Joseph finalized fifth with 52.93 for four team points.
In the men's mile, both Cyclone runners medaled. Too crossed the finish line in 4:00.58 (3:57.77 altitude conversion) for fourth and Smith in 4:03.72 (4:00.91 conversion) for seventh.
Thai Thompson and Jack Vetsch completed the heptathlon securing top-six placements. Thompson built his way up the pack in the 1,000m run to finalize second and close the heptathlon with 5,344 points, good for fifth. Jack Vetsch placed sixth with a new personal best of 4,975. The score improved Vetsch's standing at No. 9 in program history.
