AZUSA, Calif. – Two throwers both made moves to third-ranking program marks while three multi-event athletes recorded personal bests as the Cyclones continued competition at the Bryan Clay Invite, Mt. SAC Relays and the Long Beach Invite.
Cam Jones made another move up the program all-time ranks in the hammer throw with a mark of 205-0 (62.50m), improving to No. 3. Jones tops his previous ISU best of 192-4, which ranked as the seventh-best throw, while also topping his lifetime best of 200-7.
After coming within two inches of her hammer throw lifetime best yesterday at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, Kaitlyn Burson passed the mark with 202-6 (61.74m) at the Long Beach Invite. Burson's mark yesterday was an ISU PR to make her introduction at No. 3 in program history, and today's finish improves her mark at No. 3. Burson finished as the fourth collegian and sixth overall.
At the Bryan Clay Invite, Jason Gómez timed in just under a second from his No. 5 ISU ranking PR with a season-best 1:47.26 in the invitational 800m. Darius Kipyego also put up a sub-1:49 time with 1:48.75 in his 800m season opener. Gómez placed sixth while Kipyego solidified 21st. In the women's invitational 800m, Makayla Clark set a PR with 2:06.63, just .06 seconds off the 10th-fastest time in school history.
Thai Thompson set a javelin PR of 162-8 (49.58m) and matched his pole vault PR (14-5 1/4, 4.40m to enter the final event with 6,475 points. Thompson remained hot, winning the 1,500m run with a PR 4:41.84 to cross over the 7,000-point barrier for a new decathlon personal best of 7,144 to move up a spot to No. 6 in program history. Thompson placed third overall and set or matched five event PRs through the 10 events.
Sydney Willits picked up her second event win in the heptathlon with a long jump mark of 19-2 1/2 (5.85m) to begin day two. The sophomore turned in a four-second PR of 2:26.48 in the 800m to close the final event with a career-best 5,057 points, 12 points off first place to finish third at the Bryan Clay Invite. The mark improved her score as the fifth-best heptathlete in program history and is one-point shy of the fourth-best score.
Kiersten Fisher also ran a four-second PR with an 800m time of 2:26.40, finishing the heptathlon with 4,852 points for seventh overall. The score is a career best as the sophomore completed her second heptathlon, moving from No. 10 to No. 7 in program history. Both Willits and Fisher turned in three personal bests through the seven events.
Kailynn Gubbels finalized her first-career heptathlon with 4,603 points for 17th place. The score is 19 points off the 10th-best in school history.
The 5K crew ran into the night, notching best marks. Titus Winders built his way up the pack in his heat to shave seven seconds off his record with 3:43.00, just over three seconds from the 10th-fastest in program history. Both Taylor Briggs and Kaylee Tobaben had major time drops as Briggs cut off 17 seconds (16:55.53) and Tobaben trimmed 20 seconds (17:04.87).
