AMES, Iowa – Iowa State earned 28 NCAA West Preliminaries entries, announced by the NCAA Thursday. The women put up one relay and 13 individual qualifying marks in 11 events while the men have 14 in eight events. Iowa State continues to improve season-to-season after having 23 entries in 2022 and 21 in 2021.
Fresh off the highest Big 12 Outdoor Championships finish in program history of third, the women continue to show progress. Last season the women earned 10 entries and three in 2021. After posting a blistering school-record time of 3:31.02 in the 4x400m relay, the women earned ISU's first West Prelims entry in the event since 2014, entering as the No. 7 seed.
The Cyclones earned multiple entries in six events, the men's 800 (four), men's 1,500 (three), women's 5K, women's 10K, women's 100m hurdles and men's steeplechase.
The men's 800m will be loaded with Cyclones as four cemented their spots. Jason Gómez 1:47.26), Darius Kipyego (1:47.41), Peter Smith (1:47.49), Cebastian Gentil (1:48.39) are locked in. Gómez qualifies for the third-straight season while Kipyego, Smith and Gentil qualify for the second-straight.
The men's 1,500m will also see a lot of Cyclones as three are entered. Ezekiel Rop is the No. 3 seed with his school record of 3:36.92 while Chad Johnson (No. 39, 3:43.52) and freshman Emanuel Galdino (No. 47, 3:44.62) are also entered. Rop and Johnson will run for the first time at West Prelims after qualifying in the 5K in previous seasons. Titus Winders picked up his first-career West Prelims qualifying mark in the 5K with 13:43.00 (No. 24 seed).
No. 7 seed Cailie Logue and No. 48 seed Madelynn Hill hit NCAA West Prelims marks in the 5K (Logue 15:36.40, Hill 16:13.42). Hill will make her debut at NCAA Preliminaries. Logue is also entered in the 10K with the eighth-fastest seed time of 32:33.63, while Dana Feyen qualified with the No. 23 seed time of 33:14.55. At Big 12 Championships, Logue became the first in Big 12 history to sweep the 5K and 10K three times, the sixth time Iowa State has swept the events. Logue is also the first in Big 12 history to take hold of three outdoor 5k titles.
The throws group earned five entries. Kevin Sakson earned his spot in both the shot put and discus for the third-straight season. Sakson enters as the No. 21 seed in the shot put (62-1, 18.92m) and the No. 31 seed in the discus (186-5, 56.82m). The third-ranked javelin thrower in Cyclone history, Zach Podraza, ranks 19th in the West region with 223-10 (68.23m).
For the women, two school record holders qualified in their respective events. Kaitlyn Burson (209-8, 63.91m) will throw in the hammer throw as the No. 12 seed and Emily March (185-9, 56.61m) in the discus as the No. 10 seed. March will compete in the discus for the second-straight year.
Freshman Rachel Joseph has made her mark this season and will continue onto regionals as the No. 22 seed with her 400m dash mark of 52.36 which ranks second in school history. Joseph owns the indoor 400m dash school record and is a part of both the indoor and outdoor 4x400m relay record teams.
Fellow freshman Makayla Clark earned another postseason run with her 800m bronze-medal finish of 2:05.56 at conference which ranks ninth in ISU history. Clark enters regionals as the No. 23 seed.
Women earned spots in both hurdling events. No. 16 seed Kaylyn Hall (13.12, No. 2 ISU) and No. 37 seed Katarina Vlahovic (13.45) qualified in 100m hurdles and Zakiyah Amos qualified in 400m hurdles with 57.99, the 16th-fastest seed time. Amos has lowered her time four times in her first season racing in the event. Her 57.99 ranks seventh in ISU history as she made the first addition to the top 10 list since 2015 and the fastest since 2014. Multi-event athlete Thai Thompson will run in 400m hurdles for the men (No. 42, 52.04).
Steeplechasers recorded three qualifying times. Gable Sieperda (No. 20, 8:44.64) and Kelvin Bungei (No. 32, 8:49.31) are in for the men as is school-record holder Janette Schraft (No. 12, 9:57.55) for the women.
