Wolfpack Classic

RENO, Nev.- The Iowa State men's golf team won its first tournament since 2004, claiming the title at the Wolfpack Classic, Tuesday afternoon in Reno, Nev. The Cyclones carded a 22-under 842 for the tournament, shattering the previous school record (850- 1997 Red Raider Intercollegiate) for low 54-hole tournament by eight shots. The Cyclones were in second place heading into the final round, but a stellar 10-under 278 tally today helped ISU jump ahead of Utah in the team standings and capture the title by a 7-stroke margin.
"This is a well-deserved and very satisfying win for our team and a complete team effort," ISU head coach Jay Horton said. "They have been working extremely hard and they deserved this victory. Our guys from top to bottom are constantly pushing each other and making us better."
The team effort Horton was referring to was evident in the medalist race. ISU had three players finish in the top-10 while avoiding a counting score of over par (72) throughout the entire three rounds. Junior Joe Cermak led the Cyclones, tying for third with a three-day total of 210 (71-71-68). Senior Rodney Hamblin posted a personal-best 211 (68-72-71), including a career-low 68 in the first round, to tie for sixth. Junior Chris Baker was the final Cyclone top-10 finisher, tying for ninth at 212 (74-71-67). Baker and Cermak's sub-70 scores in the final round paced ISU to a 278, one stroke shy of the team 18-hole school mark. Freshman Cameron White (T20, 216) and junior Cedric Bertin (T52, 222) also participated in the tournament for the Cyclones.
Utah's Dustin Pinn won the medalist title with a 205, followed by Colorado State's Zen Brown at 208. The Cyclones are back in action on Oct. 16, participating in the Big Four Championship in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
