MANHATTAN, Kansas – The legend of Iowa State's Wesley Kiptoo continued to grow Saturday, as the Cyclone star put together a historic win in the men's steeplechase Saturday evening at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Kiptoo's school, meet and facility record, along with NCAA Division I leading mark this season, led a 21-point effort for the No. 7 Cyclone men in the steeplechase, with David Too taking third and Gable SIeperda fourth. In the women's steeple, ISU went 2-3 with Abby Caldwell taking silver and Janette Schraft dropping a huge PR for bronze.
In the team standings, Iowa State's men maintained its lead in the team standings, now up to 68 points. The Iowa State women head into Sunday in fourth place with 38 points.
In a theme that should be familiar to followers of Kiptoo's pursuits, he went out way ahead of the field in his Cyclone steeplechase debut, leading by over six seconds one water jump in and not looking back. Kiptoo looked to have been easing to another win, but found a second-wind at the end which led to a historic mark of 8:31.82.
Kiptoo's time is a new school record, taking down Dmitry Drozdov's 8:32.01 from the 1996 NCAA Championships, a new Big 12 Championships record (his second in as many days) and R.V. Christian Track record. At the time of publication, Kiptoo's mark is also the best in NCAA Division I this season.
Joining Kiptoo in the top-four was David Too, who followed up last night's fourth-place in the 10,000m with a bronze-medal 8:49.72. Gable Sieperda crossed in fourth, in a personal best 8:50.46 to add another five points to the ISU team total.
Caldwell and Schraft were part of a group of five that separated themselves from the field early in the first 900 meters, which then went down to a group of the two Cyclones and WVU's Ceili McCabe heading into the final lap. McCabe found a second gear off the hurdle heading out of turn two and burst pass the previously leading Caldwell and pulling away. Caldwell took silver with a 10:17.66, while Schraft surged to bronze with a 17-second PR of 10:19.99, which also moved her up to No. 3 in ISU history.
Keiara Williams added another point to the Iowa State women's team total with a personal best effort in the shot put at 51-1 (15.57m) on her third throw of the competition. Williams also moved up from eighth to sixth in ISU's all-time top-10 for the event.
In running prelims, the Iowa State men advanced nine competitors to tomorrow's finals. The Cyclones will have two No. 1 seeds, with Festus Lagat running the fastest time of 1,500m prelims in 3:43.56, and Mason Weh clocking the best mark in the 110m hurdles in his best mark as a Cyclone, 13.74.
Iowa State will have five representatives in the final of the men's 800-meter run. Daniel Nixon led the way and will be the No. 2 seed tomorrow, running his best time as a Cyclone in 1:47.65. Roshon Roomes joined him from his heat in 1:48.37. Jason Gomez, the Big 12 Indoor champion at 800m, finally got his mark on the board during outdoor season, clocking a 1:47.92 to win his heat and move into ninth in ISU outdoor history for the event. Alex Lomong took second to Gomez in his heat with a season-best 1:48.52, a mark that also puts him in contention to advance to the NCAA West Preliminaries in two weeks. Lagat controlled his heat and eased to a 1:50.35 to take the auto-qualifying slot and ensure his double tomorrow.
Eric Fogltanz hit his first hurdle of his 400-meter hurdles heat and caused himself a stumble, but the four-time All-American able to rally and come back to to win his section in 51.95 to auto-advance to tomorrow's final.
In addition, there was no women's 1,500m prelim, which meant Madelynn Hill got an automatic advance to tomorrow's final.
