AMES, Iowa – Over the years, the Iowa State Classic has produced many of the nation's best times across events and the Cyclones did not disappoint on Friday, putting up some big performances to put themselves among the nation's elite in the 2022 indoor season.
Meanwhile in Seattle at the Husky Classic, Thomas Pollard was able to do the same in the invitational 5,000-meter run at the Dempsey Indoor.
The highlight of Iowa State's Friday at The Classic performances came in the women's 5,000-meter run as Cailie Logue took on her latest showdown with the Hasz sisters (Bethany and Megan) of Minnesota. It was clear from the gun that it would be a three-horse race between those three, as they went with pacer Madeline Strandemo and left the field behind. When the pacer stepped off with 2,000 meters to go, Logue took over, pulling away from the Golden Gopher duo to eventually bring home the win in an indoor personal best of 15:46.24. At the time of publication, her time is good for 22nd in NCAA Division I this indoor season. Dana Feyen was also strong, posting a 23-second PR to finishing sixth in 16:06.26, moving up to No. 8 in ISU indoor history.
In the men's 3,000-meter run, Wesley Kiptoo got his chance to bounce back after a tough Millrose Games 3K two weeks ago. The Cyclone star delivered, taking second place in 7:48.98. The time is the second-fastest in ISU history, only behind Kiptoo's 7:48.36 run at Arkansas in January 2021. Chad Johnson continued his outstanding indoor season with a fourth place finish in a PR 7:52.14, moving up to No. 5 in ISU indoor 3K history in the process. Johnson made big moves late in the race, as he was sitting 11th at the halfway point. At the time of publication, Kiptoo is 12th in NCAA Division I on the season at 3K, while Johnson is 26th.
The Cyclone women's team got another win on the day via a dominant performance in the women's 60-meter hurdles. Things were set up well in prelims, with Katarina Vlahovic posting a season-best 8.29 in prelims, and Kaylyn Hall taking second in a then-PR of 8.31. In the final about 90 minutes later, both went even better, Vlahovic winning in 8.21 and Hall second in 8.24. The duo are now No. 3 and 4, respectively, in ISU history for the event.
The Cyclone women got three other all-time top-10 efforts on Friday. Sydney Willits continued to show her versatility with a second-place finish in the long jump with a PR 19-11 (6.07m) to move her to No. 9 in ISU history. Zakiyah Amos's second-place 1:22.27 in the 600-yard run put her at No. 8 in ISU history for the event, while Antonella Creazzola fired a 59-10 1/4 (18.24m) to improve on her No. 10 all-time mark in the weight throw.
In the men's weight throw, Jonathan Gannon had a huge four-and-a-half foot PR of 59-11 3/4 (18.28m) to finish 13th and enter Iowa State's all-time top-10 for the event at No. 9.
The Cyclone men got a victory from Joe Schaefer in the 1,000-meter run, as he crossed first in 2:28.45 with teammate David Thompson second in 2:29.06.
Husky Classic
Late night at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Thomas Pollard continued his outstanding 2021-22, finishing ninth in the invitational 5,000-meter run and cutting another seven seconds off his personal best in the 5K. Having previously gone 13:45.34 in December at Arkansas, Pollard went after again, posting a 13:38.82. Pollard's effort moved him up from seventh to fourth in ISU indoor 5K history, joining three Iowa State NCAA champs in having gone sub-13:40 indoors in the 5K: Wesley Kiptoo, Edwin Kurgat and Jonah Koech.
