02.17.2022 | Track and Field
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State track and field will be sending student-athletes to a pair of meets on Friday. A small group of men's distance and middle distance competitors will head to the Arkansas Qualifier in Fayetteville, while some of the Cyclones' sprints and hurdles and throws groups will be in action at the Snowshoe Open, hosted by Minnesota.
Competition at both sites will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday. The Arkansas Qualifier will be streamed on SEC Network+, starting at 3 p.m., here. Live results will be provided by Flash Results, here. There will be no live video from Minnesota, while live results will come from Wayzata Results, here.
For Iowa State's squad headed to Arkansas, this is another opportunity to get a foot-hold in the deepest and most competitive of seasons in distance and middle distance running. The distance medley relay will be first on the ISU docket at 3:50 p.m., followed by 800s at 5:45 p.m. and Wesley Kiptoo in the 3,000m at 6:55 p.m.
The Cyclones have qualified for the men's DMR at the NCAA Indoor Championships six of the past seven seasons, but are currently on the outside looking in at 18th nationally with a 9:46.07 from the Razorback Invitational last month. The 12th-place time heading into this weekend belongs to Columbia in 9:42.74. The Cyclones have the pieces, with a relay pool of Tanner Anderson, Jason Gomez, Darius Kipyego, Frank Hayes, Wesley Kiptoo, Alex Lomong and Nehemia Too all available to make the run to qualify.
Anderson, Kipyego, Hayes and Lomong will all run in the 800m run at Arkansas, with Hayes being the highest ranked of the group at 26th heading into the weekend after his 1:48.28 at the Iowa State Classic a week ago. Lomong is not far behind in 31st with his 1:48.43 from the Meyo Invitational two weeks ago. The 16th place bubble time is currently 1:48.01.
For Kiptoo, the depth of the men's 3,000m is demonstrated by his 7:48.98 last weekend at the Iowa State Classic, only six-tenths slower than his school record from last season, is only good for 28th heading into this weekend. Kiptoo does have a good history at Arkansas, running his school record 3,000m and anchoring for ISU's school record DMR at Arkansas last year and running to his NCAA Indoor title at 5,000m last season in Fayetteville. Coming into the weekend, 16th in the 3K is 7:47.14.
Meanwhile in Minnesota, a small group of sprints-hurdles-multis and throwers will get one more tune-up opportunity before Big 12s next weekend in Ames. Jack Vetsch is entered to make his season debut in the pole vault in prep for the heptathlon next week, while in the throws Kevin Sakson will look to build off his season-best in the invitational shot put. Jonathan Gannon had a huge 4.5-foot PR in the men's weight throw last week and will get another shot on Friday.
