AMES, Iowa – Iowa State begins the road to NCAA Championships with NCAA West Preliminaries May 24-27 in Sacramento, California. The Cyclones have 28 entries including one relay.
Live results are provided by Flash Results. Events will be streamed each day on ESPN+ available at the links above. The top 12 from each event will advance to NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas June 7-10.
Iowa State has four returners who punched their tickets to the Championships last year, Jason Gómez and Cebastian Gentil in the 800m and Kevin Sakson and Emily March in the discus.
Zach Podraza will get the Cyclones started on Wednesday with the javelin with his fourth trip to West Prelims in the event. Day one will continue with the men's events before the women begin competition Thursday.
Three freshman, Emanuel Galdino (1,500m), Rachel Joseph (400m) and Makayla Clark (800m), earned their spot in West Prelims while four other Cyclones will also make their regionals debut. Madelynn Hill qualified in the 5,000m, Titus Winders in the 5,000m, Thai Thompson in 400m hurdles and Kelvin Bungei in the 3,000m steeplechase.
Zakiyah Amos will compete for the first time at NCAA Prelims in 400m hurdles after racing in the 400m dash in previous years while both Ezekiel Rop and Chad Johnson will run in the 1,500m after qualifying in the 5,000m last year. Rop enters the 1,500m as the No. 3 seed.
The quartet of Jason Gómez, Darius Kipyego, Peter Smith, Cebastian Gentil returns once again to West Prelims in the 800m run, all are top-10 ranked program performers in the event. The squad lowered their average time to 1:47.64 after Big 12 Championships to move up to now rank second in the nation.
