IOWA CITY, Iowa – Festus Lagat's school record in the men's 1,000-meter run was the highlight of Iowa State's day at the Jimmy Grant Invitational at the UI Recreation Building. Lagat led an ISU 1-2-3 in the 1K, with the trio of Lagat, Roshon Roomes and Daniel Nixon the new top-three in ISU history for the event.
Across all the events on Saturday, Iowa State racked up seven event wins.
Lagat's performance was setup by pacer Cebastian Gentil, who took the field through the first 600 in 1:21.34 before stepping off. From there the All-American finished the final 400 in under a minute, including a final 200 of 29.06 to bring home the victory and the new school record. The old school record was Edward Kemboi's 2:21.89 at the 2013 New Balance Invitational at the Armory in New York City. Roomes and Nixon both came in under Kemboi's previous school record, Roomes in second in 2:21.29 and Nixon third in 2:21.56.
Lagat is also the new facility record holder at the UI Recreation Building, taking down the old mark of 2:24.24. Lagat is the first runner at NCAA Division I to go under 2:21 in the 1,000m run since Virginia Tech's Neil Gourley in 2017. He is also the only Division I men's runner to go under 2:21 in the 1K in a December meet in the last decade.
Other winners on the track for the Iowa State on Saturday included Gentil, who was competing unattached and won the open men's 300-meter dash. Winners on the women's side included freshman Bria Barnes in the 300-meter dash invite, who marked her Iowa State debut with a meet-record 38.74, Maggie Davis in the 1,000-meter run (3:00.98) and Larkin Chapman in the 3,000-meter run (10:02.83).
Another notable performer for the Cyclone women was sophomore Katarina Vlahovic, who posted a pair of personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles. She went 8.50 in prelims and took third in 8.46 in the final, moving up to No. 5 in ISU history in the event. She also finished second in the open division of the 300-meter dash in 41.38.
In the field, the performances of Keiara Williams highlighted the Cyclones' efforts on Saturday. The junior thrower notched a pair of indoor personal bests, picking up the win in the women's shot put at 47-1 3/4 (14.37m) and taking fourth in the weight throw at 56-4 1/2 (17.18m). Other event winners for Iowa State in the field included Erika Furbeck in the women's long jump (19-2 3/4, 5.86m) and Cody Durbin in the men's high jump (6-6 3/4, 2.00m).
