Cyclones Strong on Final Day of Iowa State Classic

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State put up another strong group of performances on Saturday to close out the Iowa State Classic at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center. ISU saw good performances across all disciplines in the final tune-up before the Big 12 Indoor Championships in two weeks at Texas Tech.

In the men's 800-meter run, Alex Lomong ran his first sub-1:50 in nearly two years via a third-place finish in 1:49.58, moving him up to No. 16 in NCAA Division I on the season at the time of publication. Competing unattached, Cyclone Daniel Nixon clocked a huge indoor personal best en route to finishing second in 1:47.98.

Iowa State's lone event winner of the weekend came in the women's 60-meter hurdles as Katarina Vlahovic continued her strong run of performances. Vlahovic stretched at the line to cross in 8.29 (the second-best run of her career) and edging Weber State's Tawnie Moore by 0.01 second. The Cyclones had three of the top-four, with Tatiana Aholou in third at 8.50 and Kaylyn Hall fourth at 8.59.

In the field, Kevin Sakson had his best day as a Cyclone in the men's shot put. The Estonian notched the three best throws of his career during his series on Saturday, capped with a personal best 57-6 1/4 (17.53m) on his fourth throw. The throw also entered him onto ISU's all-time top-10 for the event.

Two more Cyclones gained entry onto ISU all-time top-10s Saturday in Erika Furbeck in the women's 200-meter dash (24.81, eighth in ISU history) and Bria Barnes in the women's 400-meter dash (55.70, eighth in ISU history).
