AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's Cailie Logue added another piece of hardware to her extensive collection, as she earned the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships Women's High Point Award on Saturday at the Big 12 Indoor Championships. After earning the title in the 5,000-meter run on Friday, Logue came back to earn silver medals in both the mile and 3,000-meter run at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center on Saturday.
Logue's efforts highlighted a day in which the Cyclones earned five top-three finishes across men's and women's competitions. As a team, the Iowa State men finished fourth with 68 points, while the Cyclone women took sixth with 60 points.
In the mile to start her day, Logue was strategic with her racing, staying in fifth for the first half of the race before working her way to the front and eventually overtaking WVU's Ceili McCabe on the final lap to claim second in a personal best 4:36.46. Her time moved her up to No. 2 in ISU history for the event, only .03 seconds off the school record of Karen Glerum that has stood since 1992.
Three hours later, Logue was back again and in a battle with a quartet of Oklahoma State Cowgirls. It eventually came down to Logue and OSU's Taylor Roe, who was the winner in the mile earlier in the day. Logue was able to counter Roe's surge and looked to her outside heading off the final corner, but Roe did well to block the move and hang on to win. Logue crossed second in 9:36.33, while the strategic pace of the second section meant freshman Riley Beach, in her first collegiate 3,000m was able to take seventh and score for ISU in 9:43.87.
In the men's 3,000m, it was a battle from the start between Wesley Kiptoo and OSU's Alex Maier. Both guys traded the lead up to the final lap, with Maier ahead. Kiptoo initially moved ahead on the back stretch, but in the final turns Maier was able to kick in another gear to take the win. Kiptoo got his second silver medal in as many days in 7:50.43, leading a four-scorer ISU contingent with Chad Johnson (fifth, 7:58.45), Ezekiel Rop (seventh, 8:01.34) and Thomas Pollard (eighth, 8:02.13).
The ISU men also scored four in the 800-meter run, with Frank Hayes using an aggressive race strategy to get ahead early. While he was unable to hang on, he did get a bronze medal with an Iowa State indoor best of 1:48.10, while Alex Lomong took fourth in 1:48.17, moving up to sixth in ISU indoor history in the process. Peter Smith (seventh, 1:51.05) and Jason Gomez (eighth, 1:56.79) also got on the board for the Cyclones.
Zakiyah Amos was also able to get a bronze medal in the 600-yard run, as she was able to bounce back from being in the back-of-the-pack of her section to for the first half of the race to the front on the home stretch to win her section in a personal best 1:20.79, a time that was good enough for third. Her time also moved her up to No. 4 in ISU history for the event.
