After last week was limited to just a small group of men's distance runners, a group of 36 Cyclone student-athletes have made the trip to Tempe for this weekend's competition. Many of these student-athletes will be in action for the first time in two weeks, while some will be posting season debuts.
The men's 800-meter run Saturday night at 10:10 p.m. Central will be one of the feature events, with Jason Gomez and Darius Kipyego among ISU's five entries. Gomez was the lead-off for Iowa State's sixth-place distance medley relay team at the NCAA Indoor Championships last month, while Kipyego impressed in his freshman indoor season, scoring at the Big 12 Championships in the 1,000 meters and leading for the ISU's DMR team that took the silver medal at the conference championships.
Friday will also see a multi-events debut for Zach Kraft, who will be doing his first collegiate decathlon, beginning at 11 a.m. Central. The LeMars Ghelen graduate prepped himself through indoor season with a variety of sprinting and throwing events on his schedules.
The women had strong performances at both the Raleigh Relays and Bobcat Invitational two weeks ago, with many of that same crew ready to go again this weekend. Kaylyn Hall impressed in both hurdles races, clocking a wind-legal personal best 13.34 in the 100-meter hurdles and a PR 59.32 in the 400-meter hurdles at Texas State. Bria Barnes impressed with her 54.40 in the 400 meters and is entered in that event again.
After putting gup strong efforts at 1,500m meters two weeks ago in Raleigh, the trio of Bella Heikes, Riley Beach and Maggie Davis cut down their distance to 800m on Saturday. In the field, Sydney Willits begins her prep for the heptathlon later this season with the 100-meter hurdles, high jump and a collegiate debut in the javelin all on her docket for the weekend.
