FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – The first day of the NCAA West Preliminaries at John McDonnell Field saw the Cyclones advance four entries into Friday's quarterfinal rounds and for the opportunity to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in two weeks in Eugene, Oregon.
The Cyclones were able to bring three through to Friday's quarterfinal for the men's 800-meter run, with Cebastian Gentil leading the way, winning his heat in 1:48.01. Jason Gomez (1:48.70) and Peter Smith (1:49.13) also secured auto-qualifying berths in their respective heats to ensure second runs. Gomez is continuing his quest to repeat qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships for a second-straight season.
In the men's 1,500m First Round, Nehemia Too did exactly what he needed to do to ensure he would run again on Friday at 5:15 p.m. Too led the field through the first three laps of the race, and though he faded to his eventual heat finish of fourth, he had ensured he did enough to get an auto-qualifying spot in 3:46.61.
It was immediately clear in the men's 10,000m run with its 12 spots to Eugene up for grabs that it would be a tactical race, with a 70-second opening lap being the indicator. Thomas Pollard and Ryan Ford bided their time in the back before making moves into the front pack near the midway point to settle in for a battle. While Ford had to bow out before the final laps, Pollard was hanging on with a lead pack of 17 heading into the final mile.
Coming out of turn four with 1,300m to go, Stanford's Charles Hicks ran into Arkansas' Emmanuel Chebosen, starting a four-person pile up that collected Pollard, who was near the back of the lead pack. Though Pollard was the first to get up, he was unable to reconnect with the leaders and ended up taking 15th place in 29:04.74. Ryan Ford did not finish, but is entered in the 5,000m run on Friday night.
