FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas – It was the Iowa State women's team's turn to take center stage at the NCAA West Preliminaries at John McDonnell Field on Thursday. The Cyclones got a pair of gutsy efforts in the 10,000-meter run, while Kaylyn Hall ensured she would get her shot at Eugene on Saturday.
The 10,000m saw Dana Feyen and Winrose Chesang take their time working their way up the field, as the duo was comfortable staying near the back of the pack and along the inside lane throughout the early proceedings. The Cyclones did well to time their surges with when the field was breaking up, ensuring they could stay in the lead pack as long as needed.
The lead nine broke off from the remaining pack, but Feyen was able to stick it out with a group of about seven to battle for the final three tickets to Eugene. At the bell, ISU's Big 12 champion at 5,000-meters was in 13th, needing to just get past one adversary, but she was unable to reel in Utah Valley's Hannah Branch and missed the trip to Hayward Field by one spot in 34:05.86.
As for Chesang, a little bump from behind with eight laps to go slowed her momentum enough to see her fall off the lead pack, but she rallied to finish 20th in a personal best 34:26.83, an eight-second personal best in her final race as a Cyclone. He also improved her seed comfortably, coming into the meet as the No. 33 seed for the women's 10,000m.
Kaylyn Hall earned a second run in the 100m hurdles, qualifying on time with a 13.38, the 20th-fastest time of the day. Her teammate Katarina Vlahovic just missed out on joining her in the quarterfinals on Saturday, finishing 26th in 13.54 and missing the advancing cutoff by 0.06 seconds.
Hall came back later in the evening to compete in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing 44th in 1:01.63.
In the women's hammer throw, Antonella Creazzola did her best against a strong field, in flight two of three, she opened up with a solid first throw of 186-9 (56.93m) before improving to 195-4 (59.55m) on her second throw. However, she could not keep the momentum going as her third throw was 184-11 (56.36m). She was ninth after two flights and eventually settled for 25th after 11 of the 12 qualifiers for Eugene came out of flight three.
Sydney Willits wrapped up her freshman campaign in her best event, the long jump, posting a best jump on the day of 19-6 (5.94m) to finish in 32nd place. Willits was solid across all three of her efforts, beginning with a 19-4 3/4 (5.91m) and then getting a 19-4 1/4 (5.90m) on her second jump before finishing with her best effort of the day of 19-6 on her final leap.
