AMES, Iowa – Iowa State prepares for a week full of action with four meets on the slate. Drake and Penn Relays highlight the week while Iowa State will return to Penn Relays for the first time since 1922. ISU will also compete at the Kip Janvrin Open April 28 and the Desert Heat Invite April 29.
The 113th Drake Relays begin Wednesday, April 26 with multi-events and run through Saturday, April 29. ISU has two entered in the decathlon, beginning at 11:30 a.m., and five in the heptathlon, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Returning Drake Relays Champion Emily March will compete in the discus again this year after becoming the first in program history to win the event at last year's Drake Relays.
The Kip Janvrin Open will be Friday, April 28th hosted by Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa and will see the Cyclone throws squad compete. Four men will throw the hammer and one will compete in the shot put.
At the Penn Relays, the 4x800m relay squad is scheduled to begin at 2:07 p.m. CT Saturday, April 29. Darius Kipyego, Peter Smith, Ezekiel Rop and Jason Gómez will head to Franklin Field in Philadelphia. Iowa State's current school record of 7:12.57 is the fifth-fastest in collegiate history.
Three head to Tucson, Arizona for the Desert Heat Invite hosted by the University of Arizona on Saturday, April 29. Cebastian Gentil looks to post a fast mark in the 800m run while Zakiyah Amos and Rachel Joseph look to do the same in the 400m dash. The 800m run is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. CT and the 400m dash at 8:20 p.m. at Drachman Stadium.
Amos and Joseph will take another shot at the 400m dash while Gentil will put up his first mark of outdoor season in the 800m. At the Beach Invite, Joseph turned in the fifth-fastest time in school history and fastest by a Cyclone since 2015.
