Razorback Invitational
An elite field of collegiate squads awaits Iowa State at the Tyson Track Center this weekend, with the Cyclones joined by hosts Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, LSU, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Pitt, Stanford and USC.
The Iowa State men, No. 22 in this week's USTFCCCA Indoor Track & Field Index (the first of the season), have many opportunities to show what they can do in both old and new areas. ISU's middle distance and distance crew will have lots of opportunities to prove itself, with Jason Gomez and Alex Lomong in the fast heat of the 800-meter run, Chad Johnson in the fast section of the mile and Thomas Pollard in the fast section of the invitational 3,000-meter run. The Cyclones have two teams entered in the Distance Medley Relay, with this meet last season being where the Cyclones broke their school record and secured qualification to the NCAA Championships. Three-fourths of that team (Gomez, Lomong and Cebastian Gentil) will be among ISU's options in the event.
For the renewed, the Cyclones will make their return to the mutli-events this weekend for the first time since 2018 on the men's side and 2017 for the women's squad. Coach Kurtis Brondyke will help guide a pair of men through the heptathlon in Thai Thompson and Jack Vetsch, while in the women's pentathlon Sydney Willits will make her multi-events debut.
For the Iowa State women, Cailie Logue will be looking to build on her strong performances in the 1,000-meter and the mile last weekend in Ames against a strong women's 3,000-meter invitational field at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday. Kaylyn Hall will also look to continue her strong form in the 60-meter hurdles after picking up the win at the Cyclone Open last weekend.
Millrose Games
Wesley Kiptoo and assistant coach Cale Wallace have made the trip to New York The Armory on 168th Street of the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Kiptoo will be up against an elite field that includes the top collegians and professionals.
Among his collegiate competition will be Michigan State's Morgan Beadlescomb (second to Kiptoo in the 5,000m at the NCAA Indoor Championships last season) and Stanford's Charles Hicks (fourth at NCAA Cross Country in November). Among the pros are a pair of Oregon Ducks Kiptoo ran against last season in Cole Hocker and Cooper Teare and Conner Mantz, who Kiptoo dueled with at NCAA Cross Country in November.
Kiptoo ran to an Iowa State school record 7:48.36 in the 3,000 meters at the Razorback Invitational last season and went on to win the Big 12 title in the event.
