AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's Cailie Logue was the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships 5,000-meter run champion for a third-straight season to highlight the Cyclones' first day at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center. Logue led the Cyclones to five top-three finishes across the men's and women's divisions, with ISU also getting a pair of silver medals and a pair of bronze medals.
In the team standings, the ISU men are in fifth after day one with 23 points, while the Cyclone women are sixth with 21 points.
Logue always kept herself near the front of the women's 5,000m field, with her lowest spot throughout the race being fourth. She worked her way back into second behind Oklahoma State's Gabby Hentemann and stuck with the Cowgirl until it became a two-person race in the final two laps. Logue took advantage, surging around Hentemann coming off the second turn and pulling away to get the win in 16:10.94. Dana Feyen claimed the bronze medal in 16:19.52, while Winrose Chesang was also among the scorers in seventh in 16:46.20.
Logue won her 11th Big 12 title across cross country and track and field during her Iowa State career, including her third-straight indoor 5K crown.
ISU got a pair of men's silver medals in the 5,000-meter run and the distance medley relay. The DMR closed out the evening and was one of the most dramatic in Big 12 history. Oklahoma State took a lead on the first leg (a big lead that was cut down by a strong Darius Kipyego finish), but Frank Hayes and Alex Lomong reeled the Cowboys back in to hand off to Chad Johnson with the lead. Johnson and OSU's Alex Maier battled, with Oklahoma State leading at the bell. Johnson came around the final corner on the outside to try and beat Maier, but ran out of real estate, coming up .02 seconds short. ISU claimed silver in 9:37.92 to OSU's 9:37.90.
In the men's 5,000m run, an inspired performance by Texas' Yaseen Abdalla left the battle for silver, with Wesley Kiptoo able to claim it at the line over teammate Thomas Pollard. Kiptoo took second in 13:40.77, with Pollard right behind for the bronze medal in 13:40.91. Ezekiel Rop added a team point for ISU in eighth in 13:57.53.
In the field, Antonella Creazzola scored a point for the Cyclone women in the weight throw, taking eighth place with a best of 60-8 1/2 (18.50m).
Prelims action saw a school record go down in the women's 60-meter hurdles, with Katarina Vlahovic qualifying for tomorrow's final in 8.16, taking down the old record of 8.17 ran by Keira Christie-Galloway at the 2019 Big 12 Indoor Championships. Vlahovic's effort also moved her up to T-20 in NCAA Division I on the season, at the time of publication.
In the men's 800-meter prelims, Iowa State was able to qualify four, with Hayes, Lomong and Peter Smith all coming out of the first heat, and Jason Gomez controlling heat two to make it a quartet of Cyclones in action tomorrow.
Across the men's and women's prelims action, ISU advanced 12 into finals tomorrow, with Logue and Janette Schraft being in the women's mile final tomorrow, as there was no prelim for the event on Friday.
