LUBBOCK, Texas – Dana Feyen a Big 12 title in the women's 5,000-meter run to lead Iowa State track and field on Sunday at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships at Fuller Track. The Cyclones, especially the women's squad, got strong performances across the board throughout the day to close out the conference championships with a bang.
The Iowa State women finished fifth in the team standings with 73 points, their highest point total since getting 83 points at the 2014 Outdoor Championships (also in Lubbock) and highest team finish since taking fourth in 2013. The Iowa State men will come home in seventh play, collecting 67 points across the weekend.
Much like the women's 10K on Friday morning, Feyen was always among the front, sitting in ninth after the first complete lap and moving up to second at the 2,200m mark. With 2,000 meters to go, it was a two-person race between Feyen and Isabel Hebner of Texas. Feyen bided her time and then made her move around Hebner on the backstretch and was able to hold off a late rally from the longhorn at the line to win in 16:27.62.
Feyen got her first career Big 12 title and joins Lisa Koll (2x), Betsy Saina, Katy Moen and Cailie Logue (2x) as ISU outdoor 5K champions. Feyen's win also helped extend ISU's win-streak in the event, with Logue having won the previous two editions.
Joining Feyen in the points was Winrose Chesang in fourth (16:43.78) and Madelynn Hill, who only 10 hours earlier came sixth in the steeplechase and came back to finish fifth (including the fastest lap of the race in 68.21 to finish) in a personal best 16:59.13. Riley Beach (ninth, 17:16.37) and Sarah Murrow (10th, 17:18.97) just missed out on adding to the team total.
In the men's 5,000m, it was a 15-point day for the Cyclone men with Chad Johnson surging into the bronze medal spot. Johnson was sitting in seventh with two laps to go, but made some huge moves, going 63.57 on his second-to-last lap and running the fastest lap of the race by any competitor to finish in 56.39 to move up four spots for his best individual Big 12 finish of his career, crossing in 14:08.62. Ryan Ford added a fourth-place finish in 14:11.44 to go with his 10K silver medal from Friday. Ezekiel Rop picked up his first Big 12 track and field individual medal, finishing fifth in 14:13.95.
Iowa State racked up 17 points in the men's 800-meter run, led by a Cyclone 2-3. True freshman Darius Kipyego used a strong final 200 to surge in for silver in 1:48.83. Peter Smith was second before Kipyego passed him, but he almost got his teammate back at the line, earning the bronze medal with a personal best 1:48.85. Cebastian Gentil added three points with a sixth-place finish.
Katarina Vlahovic posted her second 100-meter personal best in as many days in the final on Sunday, finishing sixth with a 13.27. Her effort moved her up a slot in ISU history up to No. 3. Teammate Kaylyn Hall contributed two points to the ISU effort with a seventh-place finish in 13.68.
Vlahovic anchored for ISU's seventh-place 4x100-meter relay, with the other three legs being Sydney Willits, Zakiyah Amos and Bria Barnes. The quartet clocked a 45.44, the fourth-fastest time in ISU history and the fastest since the Cyclones posted their school record 44.75 at the 2001 Big 12 Championships.
Nehemia Too continued to show his strength and prowess across distances with his fourth place finish in 3:46.10, moving up from seventh at the first check point to fourth at the end.
Iowa State's relays both finished out the meet on a high note. The men's 4x400-meter relay of Joven Nelson, Gage Clay, Charlie Johnson and Tanner Anderson all split sub-48 to finish fifth in 3:10.84, while the women's 4x400 of Bria Barnes, Vlahovic, Hall and Zakiyah Amos went seventh in 3:40.40.
